Democrats poised to tighten hold on Congress
The election-year call for change echoing through the 2008 presidential campaign is also being heard in U.S. House and Senate races as Democrats appear headed toward expanding their control of Congress.Polls show voters favor Democrats over Republicans on a host of issues -- including the Iraq war, the economy and energy -- and believe the country is on "the wrong track" as an unpopular President George W. Bush nears the end of his term. Yet Democrats face challenges, too. Surveys show just one in five Americans approves of the closely divided Congress, where Democrats took control from Bush's Republicans in January 2007. Despite their loss, Republicans have blocked Democrats on a number of fronts, including efforts to withdraw from Iraq.
