Geagea slams army over Beirut incidents
Leader of the Lebanese Forces Samri Geagea has slammed the Lebanese army over its reaction to the recent unrest in the country. "The incidents in the past four days have undermined the role and authority of the army. I call on the army to understand the current dangerous situation," Geagea told the LBC TV station. Clashes erupted between supporters of the opposition and the government after Fuad Siniora's cabinet outlawed a telecommunication network used by Hezbollah and sacked the Beirut airport security chief. The opposition managed to take control of Beirut shortly afterwards and the government softened its stance over the issue. He said he had supported the election of Army Chief Michel Suleiman as president because he had believed that Suleiman had been fit to accept the job. Geagea added he endorsed the army decision to keep Beirut Airport Gen. Wafiq Shuqeir in his post but the decision meant the army was responsible for the security of passengers and what would happen in the Airport. Posted by: Fred 2008-05-12 |
