Kenyan minister cheats death as bandidos kill ten
(Xinhua) -- Kenya's Labor Minister John Munyes escaped death narrowly on Tuesday night when armed bandits invadeda village in Lokichogio area on the porous Kenyan-Sudanese border killing ten people. The minister told the local FM radio station Wednesday that a fight which ensued between security forces and the bandits on Tuesday night left at least ten people dead and scores of others injured. Munyes said the militia men, who are suspected to be from neighboring Sudan, made away with more than 5,000 head of cattle. The minister said the local police were overwhelmed by the large number of the attackers. He blamed the army and the General Service Unit (GSU) for failing to intervene even after residents made distress calls. "I expected the army, which is just a stone throw away, to come and support them. They were just there; the GSU (General Service Unit) could also not do anything. I don't know what they are doing here. They should just go," Munyes said. He said the conflict emerged over the control of watering points in the area. The region is facing drought and the pastoralist community is moving in search of water and pasture for their animals.
