Tamil Tigers commemorate first suicide attack
A dubious anniversary ... | Tamil Tigers celebrated their first suicide attack carried out by Vallipuram Vasanthan alias Captain Miller on July 5, 1987. Miller drove an explosive laden truck and detonated it at the gates of a Jaffna military camp, killing himself and more than 30 soldiers. Regular Tiger cadres who followed the truck took the soldiers by surprise. More than 100 soldiers were believed to have died in that battle.
On Saturday, Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran participated in the main ceremony at an undisclosed location to commemorate the Black Tigers - suicide cadres - who have laid their life for the Tamil cause.
According to pro-rebel web sites, several books and CDs, showing LTTE battle successes, including last years attack on the Anuradhapura air base, were launched to mark the event with Black Tiger cadres staging a cultural show.
