UN commission to probe Benazir's assassination
The United Nations (UN) has agreed to establish an independent commission to investigate the assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Friday.The Pakistani request will not be referred to the UN Security Council (UNSC), since UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has the authority to appoint a commission. Qureshi told a news conference at the UN after a meeting with Ban, "Responding positively to the issue, the secretary-general indicated that further consultation with Pakistan and others within the organisation would be required to examine the modalities and structure of a commission to determine the circumstances of, and responsibilities for, the assassination of Benazir. The objectives for the commission are to identify the culprits, perpetrators, organisers and financiers of the assassination." He explained that the secretary-general would appoint "well-respected, eminent people" to the independent commission in consultation with the Government of Pakistan.
