Israel reopens Gaza crossings after two-day closure
Israel re-opened its border freight crossings with the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Friday, an Israeli official said, two days after they were shut in response to a rocket attack. Defense Ministry official Peter Lerner said trucks carrying fuel, livestock, stationery for schools as well as food and medical supplies would enter the Gaza Strip through the Nahal Oz, Kerem Shalom, and Sufa commercial crossings. Israel and Hamas agreed on a ceasefire in June. It calls on both sides to stop cross-border violence and on Israel to ease a blockade on the Gaza Strip that was tightened after the Islamist group seized control of the territory more than a year ago. The truce has largely held, although Gaza militants have occasionally fired rockets into Israel leading to periodic closure of its borders with the coastal enclave. Posted by: Fred 2008-08-23 |
