Pakistan: Women's bodies exhumed in northwest
(AKI) - Pakistani police have exhumed the bodies of two women allegedly buried alive in the northwestern province of Balochistan. The women were believed to have been buried alive in the Baba Kot area of Nasirabad last month. Reports from the area say the women were killed in July because they wanted to marry men of their own choice.
There are reports that three other women were also killed but police have not found their bodies and the number remains in dispute. Several people have been arrested in relation to the deaths.
On Monday, Pakistan's Senate called for action to be taken against those responsible for what it called "brutal murders".
Sources told the Pakistani daily, Dawn, that police opened the graves on information provided by two arrested men, Umaid Ali and Ghous Bakhsh Umrani.
According to an initial medical report, the skull of one of the women was found broken and there were bullet wounds on the other body. "I am hopeful that other bodies would also be recovered," said DIG Shabir, who is heading the special investigation team. "Soon the mystery of the killing will be resolved and other people involved in it will be arrested."
The Balochistan High Court on Monday granted police and the Human Rights Commission time to submit reports relating to the murders.
