IAEA calls for nuke-free ME
The IAEA member states have called for a nuclear free Middle East to send a strong message to Israel, the only nuclear country in the region. During the annual meting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, the members of the UN nuclear watchdog adopted a resolution, calling on all Middle Eastern countries, including the Israeli regime, to allow the inspection of their nuclear activities. The resolution also urges the countries in the region to adhere to the Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and not to "develop, produce, test or acquire nuclear weapons." Israel is widely believed to possess hundreds of nuclear warheads in its arsenal but it has so far refused to either comment on its nuclear capabilities or allow the IAEA to inspect its nuclear facilities.
