Eight-day encounter at 15,000 feet ends in J&K, 14 dead
An eight-day-long gunbattle between militants and troops in Kashmir ended on Friday, leaving 13 militants and one soldier dead. 'The gunfight occurred in Harmukh mountain range of Kangan in Ganderbal district on September 25 at an altitude of 15000 feet, where snowfall occurs almost on daily basis and ended on October 2.Major General S.S. Goudar, general officer commanding of the armys elite counter-insurgency Kilo Force, said a group of heavily armed militants was spotted moving from Bandipora district towards Kangan. He said troops of the 10, Para regiment and 14th, 5th and 24th Rashtriya Rifles were moved on foot and by air to track them down. Contact was established with the terrorists on September 25, he said, adding that the mopping operation is still on. He said 11 AK-47/56 rifles, 27 magazines, 287 rounds of ammunition and two satellite phones were recovered from the possession of the slain terrorists.
