Saudi Arabia: Hundreds of suspected militants indicted
(AKI) - Saudi Arabia's interior ministry said that 991 suspected militants with ties to terrorist organisation Al-Qaeda have been charged and will be tried in the Kingdom's first ever terrorism trial. "We have started to bring before the courts 991 people implicated in various incidents," said Saudi Interior Minister, Prince Nayf bin Abdulaziz on Monday.

Prince Nayf added that the trials, involving some 30 terrorist attacks that killed at least 164 people since 2003, are due to begin. He did not specify a date for the start of the trials.

One of the reasons why the number of suspects is so high, is because investigations by police authorities in capital Riyadh lasted five years. During this time, tonnes of explosives, weapons, missiles and machineguns were seized.

The suspects are defined as being members of the "cells of the deviant sect", the name commonly used by Saudi authorities for Al-Qaeda.
