U.S. Cuts Aid Amid Dispute Over Court
Not like the old day when you could get aid and still bash the US for domestic political purposes. What was it called? Oh yes, biting the hand that feeds you.Washington will withhold $15 million in military aid to Ecuador because it did not sign an agreement granting U.S. military members immunity from the International Criminal Court, U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney said. The U.S. has frozen millions in aid to 35 countries in Africa, Europe, Asia and Central and South America after they failed to meet a July 1 deadline to exempt American troops and other personnel from prosecution before the court. The Bush administration fears the court could subject U.S. soldiers to politically motivated prosecutions. Ninety-two countries have ratified the treaty establishing the court.
