Maximum sentence sought for ex-sailor who leaked Navy secrets
A former Navy sailor faces sentencing in Connecticut for leaking details about ship movements. Prosecutors want Hassan Abu-Jihaad of Phoenix to get the maximum 10 years in prison when he is sentenced Friday in federal court in New Haven. Prosecutors label him a traitor who was trying to help foreign terrorists replicate the October 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, which killed 17 American sailors. Abu-Jihaads attorneys had not filed sentencing papers as of Thursday.
U.S. District Judge Mark Kravitz last month overturned last years conviction of Abu-Jihaad on a charge of providing material support to terrorists, citing the language of the law. He upheld his conviction for disclosing classified national defense information.
