Pakistan: GovŽt moots fresh probe into Bhutto murder
[ADN Kronos] The Pakistani government is considering a fresh inquiry into the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto. It has sought a legal opinion from the law and justice division of the government as the case is already with the anti-terrorism court, Pakistani daily Dawn said.Although Rawalpindi police and the Federal Investigation Agency have completed an investigation into the incident and submitted charges to the court, the FIA has been striving to obtain permission for the new investigation. Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a gun and bomb attack after returning to Pakistan from exile, at a rally outside Liaquat Bagh on 27 December 2007, in Rawalpindi. However, the investigation into the tragedy has been controversial. Five men have been arrested by Pakistan's law-enforcement agencies in connection with the assassination and are being tried by the anti-terrorism court at Rawalpindi's Adiala jail. The court had declared Bailtullah Mehsud, chief of the militant group Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, as having been involved in Bhutto's assassination.
