Russia Airspace Available for US Troop Transit
[Quqnoos] Russia has agreed to let US troops fly through its airspace to fight in Afghanistan, a top US official has told the BBC.
The new US-Russia agreement which is termed a significant achievement for the American troops is expected to be officially announced in President Barack Obama visit to Moscow, early next week. The new agreement allows US military planes to transit weapons as well as troops thousands of times a year through Russian airspace. According to the BBC report, a Russian official in Moscow confirmed the agreement but suggested it referred to weapon transit only, not military personnel.
Russia, who is not much in favor of US war in Afghanistan, restricted the use of its territory for both the US and NATO troops stationed in Afghanistan. Previously, Russia allowed US to transit only non-military supplies to Afghanistan.
