Three Thai rangers wounded in clash with terrorists
Three government paramilitary rangers were wounded early Saturday following an exchange of gunfire with terrorists suspected insurgents in Si Sakhon district of Narathiwat province, police said. The incident occurred following a bomb explosion detonated by terrorists presumed insurgents using a cell phone, and as the security team responded, it was ambushed by the insurgents, police said. An exchange of gunfire took place for over five minutes before the attackers retreated. The wounded rangers were taken to hospital for treatment, according to police.

The authorities said the bomb was planted with an aim to attack government security forces who would travel to the area following Friday night’s attack on an army outpost in which a soldier was killed and another wounded. Police said the homemade five kilogramme bomb was built in a metal box. Some 20 spent M-16 cartridges were found scattered in the rubber plantation which were believed to be from the assailants weapons.

In another incident, a marine bomb disposal unit at about 7.30 am retrieved and defused a bomb weighing 35-40 kilogrammes hidden inside a sewerage conduit in Narathiwat’s Bacho district, police said.
