US names first ambassador to Syria in 5 years
[Al Arabiya Latest] President Barack Obama Tuesday nominated career diplomat Robert Ford as the first U.S. ambassador to Syria in five years, as he seeks to engage Damascus as part of a wider Middle East peace push."His appointment represents President Obama's commitment to use engagement to advance U.S. interests by improving communication with the Syrian government and people," the White House said in a statement. If confirmed by the Senate, Ford would be the first U.S. ambassador to Damascus since Washington recalled its envoy after Lebanon's former prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri was killed in February 2005 in a bombing blamed on Syria.
