Obama, Netanyahu meet in good atmosphere
[Al Arabiya Latest] United States President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sought on early Wednesday to ease strained ties, but their talks yielded no sign of a breakthrough in the stalled Middle East peace process, as Israeli media reported that approval has been given to build 20 apartments for Jewish settlers in east Jerusalem. The high-stakes meeting between Obama and the Israeli leader lasted 90 minutes, an administration official said, but Netanyahu stayed on for another two hours at the White House before leaving the West Wing in a limousine. There was no immediate comment from either side on the tone or the substance of the talks, but Netanyahu's office said later that there was a "good atmosphere" in his meeting with President Obama. The two leaders "met privately for approximately 1.5 hours, in a good atmosphere," the office said in a statement, adding that advisors to both men were holding follow-up discussions that would continue throughout the day.
