Al-Shabab seizes control of UN compound
 Al-Shabab fighters have seized a compound housing the United Nations Operations in town of Wajid, in Bakool region, in southern Somalia. Hundreds of heavily armed al-Shabab fighters entered the compound on Thursday, disarmed around 150 security guards and ordered them to leave the area, a Press TV correspondent reported. Hope they weren't paying those boys much. The fighters confiscated equipment and foodstuffs from the United Nations' World Food Programme, and stopped civilians from entering the compound. Al-Shabab said that they have made the UN compound their main base from where they will henceforth conduct their activities. Reports say that the fighters have also seized control of a local airstrip that is used by UN agencies to distribute humanitarian aid in southern regions of the country. Posted by: Fred 2010-04-09 |
