Moscow 'Ready to Cooperate' Over Cheonan Sinking
Russia is ready to "closely cooperate" with South Korea over the sinking of the Navy corvette Cheonan in March, President Dmitry Medvedev said in a telephone conversation with his Korean counterpart Lee Myung-bak on Tuesday. Medvedev said he fully understands South Korea's sanctions against North Korea including a motion to the UN Security Council. Lee elaborated the measures in a public address the previous day. He said Moscow is ready to hold close consultations with Seoul. The Russian president pledged to try to send the right signal to the North, while helping guarantee peace and security on the Korean Peninsula, Cheong Wa Dae spokeswoman Kim Eun-hye said. Medvedev also thanked the South Korean government for informing Russia in advance of the findings of an international probe of the sinking. "The Russian president rarely talks with foreign leaders over phone," a Cheong Wa Dae official said. "Moreover, by saying he fully understands' South Korea's sanctions he implied that Russia would favorably consider another round of sanctions against the North by the UNSC." Lee told Medvedev "anachronistic armed provocation" should not be tolerated in the international community.
