3 peacekeepers killed in Darfur
Three peace keepers were killed by gunmen in an attack in the Darfur region of western Sudan, an official of the joint UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) said. The peace keepers were civil engineering workers providing security at a base this morning in the Nertiti area of West Darfur when the incident happened, AFP reported. "Brutally and without warning, about 20 men armed with AK47s )automatic weapons) opened fire at our troops," said Kemal Saiki, UNAMID's communications director. "Three peacekeepers were killed and one was seriously wounded," and needed to be hospitalized by helicopter, he said. The battle reportedly lasted an hour as three of the assailants were also killed.
