Extremist may face death
[Straits Times] AN ISLAMIC extremist could face the death penalty after being charged on Wednesday with involvement in attacks against Christians in an area of Indonesia with a history of religious violence.Eko Budi Wardoyo, arrested early this year, faces trial under Indonesia's anti-terror laws for allegedly taking part in a series of attacks on Christians in the province of Central Sulawesi, prosecutors said. The allegations link the 32-year old to a bomb attack on a busy market in a predominantly Christian town of Tentena in Poso district in May 2005 that left 22 dead. He is also accused of involvement in the fatal shooting of a female reverend as she delivered her sermon in a church in a neighbouring district of Palu in 2004. Three people among the congregation were also killed in the incident, prosecutors said. 'The defendant confessed that he was assigned by a higher leader to oversee plots against Christians as an act of revenge for Muslims killed in the sectarian conflict,' prosecutor Nasir told the Jakarta court.
