Maoists kill abducted Indian officer
[Iran Press] Maoists have killed one kidnapped Indian police officer and threatened to kill three other hostages if their demands are not met.

Sub-Inspector Abhay Kumar Yadav was killed at around 4 p.m. local time (1030 GMT) on Thursday, six hours after expiry of Maoists' second deadline of 10 a.m. local time (0430 GMT). The killing took place following a decision by a kangaroo court, the Times of India quoted an unnamed Maoist spokesman as saying.

Yadav's body was found near Simratali forest in Lakhisarai district on Bihar state early on Friday.

Yadav was one of the four Bihar policemen kidnapped by Maoists after a six-hour gunfight in Lakhisarai district on Sunday. The gun battle left seven policemen dead and ten injured. Maoists claimed the gunfight was in retaliation for the killing of their leader Azad and a journalist in Andhra Pradesh.

The other three police officers, identified as Rupesh Kumar Sinha, Lukas Gete and Ehsan Khan, would die Friday morning unless the New Delhi government agrees to initiate a dialogue with the leftwing rebels.

The Maoists and affiliated separatist groups hold sway in more than a third of India's 600-odd districts. More than 6,000 people have lost their lives since Maoists -- known as Naxalites -- launched their bloody campaign against the Indian government in the West Bengal village of Naxalbari in 1967.

They have sought to enforce a communist rule in these states since then.
