Zawahiri lashes out at Pakistan, Egypt and the West
Ayman al-Zawahiri has released an audio tape recording today blaming the US for the response to the recent floods in Pakistan. He also said the Pakistani government, which he called loyal to Washington, was to blame for the devastation caused by the massive floods which have uprooted millions.
"The primary concern of the ruling class in the government and army of Pakistan is filling their domestic and foreign bank accounts with dollars, and as far as they are concerned, Pakistan and its people can go to hell," the voice in the recording said.
He said that Washington was preventing al-Qaida and its allies from helping those in need, and threatened warned Pakistanis to be careful about receiving assistance from NATO. The al-Qaida leader then said that NATO soldiers had disgraced the Koran and insulted Mohammed.
He also mocked his own country's upcoming parliamentary election, saying Egypt's vote was a "game." He called for a jihad against the governments of Pakistan and Egypt in specific. He also urged Muslims around the world to overthrow their secular governments.
Zawahiri says that the past nine years have made clear that there are two orientations for Muslims: the path of jihad, and the path of surrender and defeat. The latter, he said, is exemplified by Mohamed ElBaradei, the former director of the IAEA, who has been calling for reform in Egypt.
