Bangladesh court rules against compelling women to wear burqa
(Xinhua) -- A High Court Division bench of Bangladesh on Monday ruled that no women within the country should be compelled to wear burqa, an outerwear that covers the entire body except the eyes and hands, against their wishes.The High Court (HC) bench also ruled that women could not be barred from taking part in cultural activities or sports. Earlier on Aug. 22, the same HC bench ruled that female students and working women in the country cannot be forced to wear veil in educational institutions and work places. Wearing of veil in educational institutions and offices is not mandatory in Bangladesh, the third largest Muslim country with 162 million people.
