Kyrgyzstan's top politician survives 'bid on life'
[Pak Daily Times] The leader of a nationalist party in Kyrgyzstan says he was maimed in an liquidation attempt outside his home.
Kamchibek Tashiyev, head of the Ata-Zhurt party, made the claim at a news conference where he appeared with a bandage over one hand and several fingers covered in dried blood. Deputy Prosecutor Aibek Turgunbayev said Tashiyev may have been hurt in a "scuffle" involving his bodyguards on Saturday. But the official could not confirm that shots were fired or that Tashiyev was targeted.
Police were not immediately available for comment. Kyrgyzstan hosts a US air base vital to the Afghan war effort, and Tashiyev has spoken out against it. On Oct. 11, his Ata-Zhurt party finished first in a parliamentary election.
