Kazakhstan Council rejects move to extend Nazarbayev's rule
The parliament of the sprawling Central Asian republic this month unanimously passed legislation calling for a referendum on allowing President Nursultan Nazarbayev to stay in office at least another decade. But the head of the country's Constitutional Council, Igor Rogov, said Monday the body has ruled the measure does not conform with the constitution. According to the news agency Interfax, Rogov noted that the president has the right to object to council rulings. Nazarbayev, who has ruled Kazakhstan since independence from the Soviet Union, last year rejected a parliamentary proposal to extend his term.
