Hannan: Zut alors! Now France wants less integration
Eh bien, je jamais. The French government is demanding less European integration.President Sarkozy, furious at the sight of Tunisian migrants being waved through by Italian carabinieri, and uncomfortably aware that opinion polls put him behind the Front Nationales Marine Le Pen, is demanding that the Schengen Treaty be revised to allow countries to reimpose frontier controls. He is reacting to Italys decision to grant six-month residency permits to thousands of North African refugees. Such permits, intended for tourists, allow the bearers to travel freely throughout the Schengen Area a border-free zone that takes in most of the EU, but from which Britain and Ireland wisely stood aside.
