Syrian Kurds Begin to Flex
Summary of piece in Middle East Research ProjectWith Assad weakening and active Kurdish interests in Iraq, Iran and Turkey, the Kurds of Syria are looking to leverage their numbers (about 10% of Syrian population) and strategic location (near the water and other resources) to gain more leverage in the anti Assad umbrella coalition. One of their demands is that the anti Assad coalition call their country "republic of Syria" rather than "Syrian Arab Republic".
