Armed suspects attacked two separate locations in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas Friday afternoon, according to Mexican news accounts.

First reports erroneously characterized the attacks as car bombs. Later reports confirmed two parked vehicles were destroyed by hand grenades.

The first attack was at 1620 hrs at a Centro Estatal de Ejecucion de Sanciones, which is a prison. A Nissan sedan was destroyed in that detonation.

Twenty minutes later at 1640 hrs a second grenade was thrown at a Ford Escort sedan parked in a business parking lot on the Ciudad Victoria-Monterrey, Nuevo Leon highway, probably Mexican Federal Highway 85.

No one was hurt in either attack.

Prior to the attacks a number of narcopintas, or blankets hung with graffiti painted on them warned of the attacks.

Narcopintas are a common means of communications used by criminal gangs to gain attention to their activities by local press.

Ciudad Victoria is a battleground between Los Zetas criminal group and their former bosses, the Gulf Cartel. The Gulf Cartel formalized an alliance with the Sinaloa Cartel earlier this year.

The last car bomb detonated in northeast Mexico was last September 15th, when a car bomb targeting a Mexican Army patrol exploded in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, narrowly missing the unit.

That bomb was an apparent response to a large Mexican Army operation which dismantled a Los Zetas logistics camp in northern Nuevo Leon earlier that week.
