Philippine military claims JI, MILF, Abu Sayyaf forming death squads
The Philippine military says the countryâs three main Islamic rebel groups have joined forces to form an urban "death squad". A spokesman from the militaryâs southern command, Lieutenant Colonel Renoir Pascua, says members of Jemaah Islamiah, the Abu Sayyaf and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front have joined forces to carry out terrorist attacks on cities in the southern Philippines. He says the death squad was formed on the initiative of Abu Sayyaf leader Khadaffy Janjalani and two members of Jemaah Islamiah.However, our reporter in Manila, Shirley Escalante, says a Muslim politicial alliance, the Maradeka, has accused the government of creating the story to divert attention from what it says is massive fraud in the recent elections.
