Blasphemy case: Samuel dies in hospital
Samuel Masih, a blasphemy suspect who was attacked by police constable Faryad on May 22 with a brick cutter in Gulab Devi Hospital, died in the emergency ward of the Lahore General Hospital on Friday. His body has been handed over to the family after an autopsy. The 27-year-old Christian man was facing trial under Section 295 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of up to two years. He was accused of littering the wall of a mosque in Lawrence Gardens on August 23 last year. Samuel was suffering from tuberculosis and had to be admitted to Gulab Devi Hospital reportedly on May 19 after a severe attack in jail. Superintendent of Police Mirza Farhan said constable Faryad had been jailed. Samuel was in police custody in the hospital. His family did not pursue the case because they were reportedly scared of the police. Samuel was in jail since last August and nobody defended his case.Posted by: Fred 2004-05-29 |
