Barack Obamas plan for same-sex rights could complicate immigration reform
President Barack Obama is expected to propose that same-sex couples be treated the same as heterosexual marriages in a campaign-style event Tuesday to announce his plan for giving millions of illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship, as well as making improvements to the legal immigration system and border security.
However, the same-sex rights proposal could complicate the process of immigration reform in the United States, as Sen. John McCain who is part of a bipartisan panel of senators who put forward a framework for immigration reform signalled he might oppose Obama on the issue.
The proposal, according to numerous U.S. reports, would recognize of same-sex couples where one partner is American and another is not.
Speaking on CBS This Morning Tuesday, McCain called the gay rights proposal a red flag.
