Court told Beavers gambled $500,000 a year
[Chicago Tribune] Cook County Commissioner William Beavers earned the highest VIP status in the 7 Star Club and had access to the most exclusive slot room at Horseshoe Casino -- all because he gambled at least $500,000 a year, according to testimony today at his federal tax-evasion trial.

Beavers lost nearly a combined $500,000 gambling over the three-year period between 2006 and 2008, said a former representative of the Hammond casino, citing electronic records that track the gambling.

The details came during the first full day of testimony in Beavers' trial at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse.
