Kashmir Korpse Kount
Suspected Islamic rebels raided a village in Indiaâs Jammu-Kashmir state and killed 11 people, police said Saturday. Another 15 people were wounded in the attack in the hilly Surankot region, 190 miles north of Jammu, the winter capital of Indiaâs Jammu-Kashmir state, a police officer said. Most of those killed were members of a Village Defense Committee, raised jointly by the Indian army and police, to protect local residents. The committee members have been armed with guns. It was not immediately known whether they also fired at the gunmen, believed to be militants fighting for Kashmirâs independence from India or its merger with Pakistan.
