WANLAWEYN, Somalia - At least 5 people were killed and 10 injured in an IED attack in Wanlaweyn district in the Lower Shabelle region on Saturday, Garowe Online reports.

According to local sources, two IED bombs were planted in Wanlaweyn district - 50 miles northwest of Mogadishu - targeting government forces and the Deputy District Councillor Nur Ahmed Nur.

Mr Nur who spoke to media said that he saw many dead bodies in the aftermath adding that the attack was an attempt on his life. Mr. Nur escaped unschathed. However, 5 people were killed and 10 injured in the two blasts. Wanlaweyn officials did not specify if the people that were killed where government forces.

Mr. Nur accused Al Shabaab of carrying the IED attacks in Wanlaweyn. Officials in the district said that they would release the official number of deaths in the attack.

Al Shabaab has yet to confirm if they had carried out the attack. The terrorist organization vacated the town of Wanlaweyn in 2012 after AMISOM and Somali Federal Government forces entered.
