ROK, Japan, U.S. Reject Unconditional Nuke Talks with N.Korea
The chief nuclear negotiators of South Korea, Japan and the U.S. on Wednesday reiterated that North Korea must make good on earlier promises to dismantle its atomic program if six-party nuclear talks are to resume. This suggests that they rejected a compromise suggested by China's top nuclear envoy Wu Dawei, who was in Washington recently, whereby the talks would restart first while North Korea acts on its pledges.In a meeting at the U.S. State Department, chief South Korean nuclear negotiator Cho Tae-yong and his counterparts Glyn Davies and Junichi Ihara discussed conditions for resumption of the talks, as well as the general situation on the Korean Peninsula. The North wants for unconditional resumption of the six-party talks and China, which nominally chairs them, has been active on all sides to get the talks underway. But the three envoys reportedly concluded that there would be no point sitting down with North Korea unless there is some guarantee that anything would be achieved.
