100 chickens discovered in small SUV during Grand Island traffic stop
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. A police officer making a traffic stop early Friday found nearly 100 chickens in a small sports utility vehicle.The officer had pulled the driver over just before 1 a.m. for driving without headlights on, said Grand Island police Sgt. Bud Edwards. When the officer approached the 2004 Nissan SUV to visit with the driver, he noticed a couple of chickens sitting on the back seat, Edwards said. The birds had apparently escaped from a makeshift cage in the back of the vehicle, he said. About 50 of the chickens in the cage were dead, he said. The driver has been charged with second-offense driving under the influence and second-offense driving during suspension. A woman riding in the vehicle was released, Edwards said. The chickens were taken to the Central Nebraska Humane Society. Edwards said the case may be referred to the county attorney for possible animal cruelty charges. Posted by: Beavis 2014-02-05 |
