group in the Central African Republic (CAR) have signed a ceasefire with anti-Balaka Christian snuffies to end months of violence.

The pact was signed on Wednesday in Brazzaville, the capital of the neighboring Republic of Congo.

"We will be signing the cessation of hostilities agreement this afternoon," said Colonel Youssouf Ben Moussa, a senior Seleka official, ahead of signing the truce.

"Our demand for the partition of the country has been dropped. That demand is obsolete now: What we have agreed to is the sharing of power."

The deal came after heavy pressure from regional mediators. It is not clear if the ceasefire will be respected by all the warring sides in the African country.

The African country descended into chaos last December, when Christian gangs launched coordinated attacks against the Seleka group that toppled the government in March 2013.

In March 2014, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos said almost all of more than 100,000 Moslems once residing in the capital Bangui had fled the violence perpetrated by Christian militiamen.
