Zap! Here's a stunning solution to crime
Blam! A single shot rings out and the knife-wielding attacker stops in his tracks, clutching at his chest. Seconds later, he's sprawled on the ground, body twitching uncontrollably. Cool - solves the distance problem of previous devices.

That'll last until the first crook with a heart condition goes titzup. At that point the grieving significant other will sue the manufacturer out of business and we'll go back to shooting them.
