Burkina Faso army dissolves government, parliament

's armed forces has announced the dissolution of the country's government and parliament following deadly anti-government protests in the West African country.

"A transitional body will be put in place in consultation with all parties. A return to the constitutional order is expected in no more than 12 months," General Honore Traore said during a news conference in the capital, Ouagadougou, on Thursday.

The military also announced a curfew from 7:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. local time (1900 GMT-0600 GMT).

Earlier in the day, Burkinabé President Blaise Compaore declared a state of emergency in the wake of violent protests at his bid to extend his 27-year rule. The protesters demanded his resignation.
