Lionel sulks
Lionel Jospin, the French Prime Minister and defeated presidential candidate, turned a deaf ear to calls yesterday from supporters to swallow his pride and throw his weight behind President Chirac.
Five days after M Jospin, 64, took his Socialists to their biggest electoral debacle since 1969, the embarrassment of colleagues was eclipsing goodwill over his dignified acceptance of his elimination from the race by Jean-Marie Le Pen of the far-right National Front. After starting his withdrawal from political life, "Poor Lionel" now looks to some colleagues as if he is sulking.
Well, that should certainly help the left defeat M. Le Pen. Perhaps he should resign in protest?
