Senior Philippine army officer injured in ambush
[Gulf Today] Two gunmen aboard a motorcycle on Thursday shot and injured a senior Philippine army officer in an ambush in Cagayan de Oro City. The victim was indentified as Colonel Edwin Respecio, the deputy commander of the 10 Regional Community Defense Group, who was shot in the head in front of the regional office of the Department of Public Works and Highways in Cagayan de Oro.A preliminary police report said Respecio was on board a vehicle when the two gunmen riding in tandem on a motorcycle shot at him, hitting him in the face. Reports later said Respecio was in stable condition at the hospital. In a separate development, one soldier was killed and another was captured in an encounter with New People's Army in a remote village in Gingoog City, Misiamis Oriental province. Two civilians were injured when they were caught in the crossfire. An NPA spokesman confirmed the capture of the Army corporal during the clash that occurred on Saturday afternoon.
