He was a leader of the Khorasan Group, a cadre of al-Qaeda operatives who were sent from Pakistain to Syria to plot attacks on the West. Officials say the Khorasan Group is embedded in the al-Nusra ...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli sh-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ... front, Syria's al-Qaeda affiliate. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the operation.
