Key militant gunned down in southern Thailand
[Bangkok Post] A key suspect wanted on many warrants for violent attacks in southern Thailand was killed and a soldier injured in a clash early on Sunday in Narathiwat province.

Security forces laid siege to the house in Rueso district after learning that key militant leader Masukarueno Yakumo was holed up inside. The siege began not long after midnight.

Masukarirueno was wanted on at least nine warrants. One of the warrants was for his participation in a bomb attack that killed a former chief of Rueso police station, and three other officials in the district on March 15 this year.

The security force, with help from the village chief, and the religious leader asked the father-in-law and wife of Masukarueno to tell him to surrender. After more than three hours of tense negotiations, the two refused to cooperate.

At about 4:30 a.m., the security force tried to send an advance team into the house. Masukarueno opened fire and a half-hour long gun battle broke out. Masukarueno was killed in the clash. His body was found lying in front of a toilet.
