Jamaat ameer among nine held in Ctg
[Dhaka Tribune] Police detained nine Jamaat-e-Islami... The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independentbranch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores... members, including the ameer of Chittagong's Patiya upazila, when they were holding a secret meeting in the dead of night yesterday. The detainees are Paitya upazila Jamaat Ameer Mokibul Chowdhury Faruk, 50, Nazrul Islam, 40, Md Iskaq, 59, Jasim Uddin, 39, Hossain Ahmed, 65, Md Iqbal, 50, Mahmudul Haque, 52, Abdul Ali Chowdhury, 73 and Nurul Alam. Officer-in-Charge of Patiya cop shoppe Md Refayet Ullah Chowhdury said police raided the Jamaat ameer's house at Paikpara area of the upazila after a tip-off and detained the Jamaat members around 11:30am. "At the meeting, they were plotting subversion," he said. Police also seized Jihadi literature from the possession of the Jamaat members. "The detainees will face legal action," added OC Refayet.
