US training Niger military, Tuareg rebels may work with the GSPC
U.S. marines have trained an elite force in the West African country of Niger to root out and kill al Qaeda-linked militants Washington fears may be roaming ungoverned swathes of the Sahara desert. They are the last West Africans to be trained as part of the U.S. Trans-Sahara Counter Terrorist Initiative (TSCTI), aimed at stopping militant groups gaining a foothold in a region which already provides 15 percent of U.S. oil supplies.Posted by: Dan Darling 2004-09-24 |
