Heavily armed rebels raided a village in Chechnya, wounding two people and burning houses, Russian media reported yesterday. Two rebels were reportedly killed in the raid. About 50 rebels entered the village of Alleroi and broke into several houses, Russian news agencies reported, quoting the regional police force. An 8-year-old girl was badly wounded in the attack on Alleroi, about 50 km east of the capital Grozny. The assailants also fired on a passing car, wounding one of its passengers, police said in a statement. Two rebels were killed during the raid. The insurgents destroyed several cars and burned down three houses, including one belonging to a Chechen police officer, who was not at home. Late Friday, another group of rebels attacked a police checkpoint near the village of Avtury in the southern Shali region of Chechnya. Four civilians were wounded hit by cross-fire in the ensuing gun battle between police and insurgents, ITAR-Tass said.
