11 Farooqi accomplices jugged
Pakistani security agencies have arrested 11 Islamic militants since killing Amjad Farooqi, the alleged mastermind of bids to kill both President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, an official said Tuesday. The detainees, all Pakistanis, include a suspect in the May 2002 suicide car bomb attack which killed 11 French naval technicians outside Karachi's Sheraton hotel, spokesman for the Sindh provincial government Saluddin Haider said. "All these arrests have been made in connection with the interrogation of the accomplices of Amjad Farooqi," Haider told AFP, referring to two militants who were arrested after the Sunday morning shootout which left Farooqi dead. "We are quite hopeful of breaking this network." Farooqi, 30, had been on the run for over two years but was traced by a mobile phone intercept to a hideout in the rural Sindh town of Nawabshah, where he and his accomplices were surrounded by paramilitaries on Sunday.
Go ahead, dumbass. Spill your source.
He was considered Al-Qaeda's key recruiter and operator in Pakistan. The two accomplices arrested after Sunday's shootout have since told interrogators that Farooqi also plotted a July 30 suicide bomb attack against Aziz as he campaigned near Islamabad. Aziz narrowly escaped but nine people, including his driver, were killed. "The two militants have revealed to interrogators that Farooqi had planned the suicide attack on the prime minister," an official familiar with the interrogation told AFP on condition of anonymity.
