Afghan soldier jailed for 15 years for desertion and joining enemy ranks

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said the soldier was serving with 201st Silab Corps of the Afghan army and has been identified as Zaib-ur-Rehman son of Mullah Jan. A statement by MoD said the soldier was originally a resident of Behsud district of Nangarhar and was found guilty of desertion and joining the enemy ranks. The statement further added that the soldier was tried in the presence of Gen. Mohammad Zaman Waziri, commander of 201st Silab Corps, Mohammad Mobin, head of the military court, the defense attorney Gen. Abdul Hafiz and other members of the Afghan army serving with 201st Silab Corps. The soldier was found guilty of deserting the post and taking with him one M16 rifle, 1 army uniform and other military equipment in mid Jun last year, according to the court hearing.
