ISIS attacks Kurd, Iraqi positions in Mosul
QAMISHLI – The radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) has stepped up its attacks on locations of the Iraqi army and Kurdish Peshmerga forces on the outskirts of Mosul city in Nineveh province, northern Iraq, Kurdish military sources reported on Wednesday.

“Daesh militants shelled joint positions for the Peshmerga and Iraqi army in Mosul suburb in a bid to impede their progress towards the city,” said Sirwan Barzani, leader of the Peshmerga forces in the fighting front of Makhmour-Kweir, using an acronym for ISIS.

The bombardment has killed and wounded a number of soldiers from the Peshmerga and the Iraqi army, the official reported.

Barzani pointed out that ISIS had earlier launched several attacks against the Peshmerga forces in the Makhmour front, “but these attacks have doubled since the arrival of the Iraqi military forces to the area.”

“Daesh (ISIS) tries to fight back after the Peshmerga and allies made remarkable gains in Mosul countryside,” he added.

Speaking to ARA News in Erbil, capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, political analyst Ahmed Suleiman said: “By launching such attacks, ISIS tries to impede the ongoing progress by the Peshmerga and Iraqi army troops near Mosul, which is the main bastion for the radical group in northern Iraq.”

“Backed by an air cover from the U.S.-led coalition, the Kurdish Peshmerga and allies Iraqi forces have launched the battle for Mosul, and they seem determined to continue their military operations there until regaining the strategic city,” Suleiman said.
